Every effort has been made to think through all the issues as the wormgineer tries to achieve the shipping goals of affordable, reliable, quick delivery of these somewhat oddball products in a world dominated by UPS.
For all WormGin and Worm Jug products, UPS ground is the standard shipping method.
We recommend but do not require UPS 3-day Select for Worm Jug shipments.
With the Worm Jug, obviously shipping a product made of glass calls for special packaging. The product's Volara foam wrapper provides an inner layer of protection, but we double box and use additional foam to withstand the ol' UPS treatment. They are not gentle.
The alert customer may be wondering at this point: "Hey wait, WormGin and Worm Jugs have live worms! Don't they need to ship overnight or second day air or something?"
No, not really. Here's the deal: if you order a pound of worms, they are going to be in a container with lotsa worms and not a lotta room for 'em. You have created a rush-rush situation there for sure. In contrast, when ordering from us, we pack your half-pound or pound of worms in lots of perfect bedding, so the rush goes away and it becomes mostly just a matter of temperatures.
The Worm Jug is large for a worm shipping container and there is only a pioneer population of worms - somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 individual worms, about 1/10 pound. They have food and excellent bedding. The whole moving around in shipment thing is very stressful for sure, but they stay dark and wet and fairly well ventilated (we poke well-located holes in the boxes). Three to five days in their double box should be no big deal to them under normal circumstances.
The big dangers in shipping are:
Your worms like the same temperatures that you do: Red Wiggler worms can survive temperatures from just above freezing to about 95 F. Of course, we want to do more than just insure survival, we want them to arrive healthy and happy.
For most of their UPS journey, they are in an semi-indoor environment. So your local weather conditions on the day of arrival are the main factor in keeping them at a comfortable temperature.
Make sure your UPS delivery person has a place to put the box IN THE SHADE AND OUT OF THE RAIN. Please send any special delivery instructions by return e-mail to any of the notices we send, and we will get that message printed where the delivery person will see it.
Ventilation is a concern but worms get their oxygen from moisture, so they are not going to easily "suffocate". If UPS were to pack your box so tightly together with other boxes that the ventilation shuts down, that would not be good, but it would have to stay like that for over a week to kill worms. And UPS does not work like that, except maybe for over a weekend. Still, ventilation is good for your little worm pioneers, so that is why we try to prevent your Worm Jug from getting stuck in a UPS truck over the weekend.
Rough Handling: The Worm Jug is designed to self-correct (with a little help from you) even if UPS shakes the thing like a paint can. I do not think anyone knows just how much abuse Red Wigglers can take before you actually kill them and I certainly am not interested in doing the research. So I have to assume that the worst case is that you receive live worms but the base bedding and worms have been spread all around the jar.
If you receive your Worm Jug with base bedding (the soil mixture) all the way up in the neck, you will need to first remove the lower bag and brush the loose soil off the bag, into the Jug Bottom (do this to prevent making a mess every time you open the Worm Jug and lift the lower bag to feed). Then clean off the soil stuck to the glass of the inside of the Jug Top, put it in the bottom. It is up to you how clean it needs to be, but DO NOT add any moisture to any part of the Worm Jug, especially the paper in the upper bag, and of course do not use any soap or cleaner of any kind.
If you are cleaning the Jug Top, you should not need to remove the upper bag. But if you need to for some reason, first take a look at how it was done and then try to duplicate this method when you replace it. The upper bag is secured to the Jug Top using a special method of twisting the net and drawing it over the neck, then making it overlap itself on the lip and securing with a rubber band located below the rim which is at the base of the threads.
There may also be Red Wigglers stuck to the inside of the Jug Top. Using moist fingers, replace them onto the base bedding where they should be happy. Or leave them right there if you don't want to handle worms.
Worm Jugs and WormGin orders with worms normally ship on Monday only. All other orders ship Monday thru Friday from stock, ASAP after you order.
Note that the size of the box for The WormGin Regular (due to the size of the bin itself) causes UPS to charge "dimensional weight", meaning that they charge for 41 pounds even though the actual weight is less than 24 pounds.
Shipping weight of The Worm Jug is 6 pounds incuding packaging
Shipping weight of WormGin Junior incuding packaging is 17 pounds (Standard) and 19 pounds (Expanding)
Shipping weight of WormGin Regular is 41 pounds incuding packaging.
When shipping charges are pre-calculated by PayPal or by the secure shopping cart, they should be as follows. That software is often wrong but I cannot fix it, so here is the base shipping charge information at least.
Note that UPS has surcharges for "delivery area" (certain rural zip codes, $2.50), residential delivery ($2.20), and a fuel surcharge (currently 5.5%). The software does not always get it exactly correct. Plus the actual shipping weight might vary by a pound. See the zip code chart below to find your UPS zone for 3-day Select shipments from Wormgineering LLC. (For UPS Ground zones, subtract 300 from the zone given)
Worm Jug (6 pounds) UPS Ground shipping charge from my zip code of 97140 to UPS zones 2 thru 8:
| 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| $5.53 | $5.97 | $6.73 | $7.10 | $7.49 | $7.88 | $8.57 |
WormGin Junior Standard: (17 pounds) UPS Ground shipping charge from my zip code of 97140 to UPS zones 2 thru 8:
| 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| $7.48 | $8.09 | $8.34 | $9.24 | $11.68 | $13.98 | $16.00 |
WormGin Junior Expanding: (19 pounds) UPS Ground shipping charge from my zip code of 97140 to UPS zones 2 thru 8:
| 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| $7.71 | $8.60 | $8.93 | $10.16 | $12.79 | $15.24 | $17.62 |
WormGin Regular: (41 pounds) UPS Ground shipping charge from my zip code of 97140 to UPS zones 2 thru 8:
| 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| $11.66 | $14.27 | $16.04 | $19.22 | $24.73 | $29.00 | $34.19 |
For Worm Jugs, we prefer to only ship on Mondays and Tuesdays for arrival by Friday in as many cases as possible. While UPS Ground is standard, UPS 3-day Select is recommended for all Worm Jug shipments, especially central and eastern time zones and Texas and New Mexico.
3-day Select orders with no weather issues will ship the Monday following the order unless you instruct us to ship ASAP.
UPS Ground orders of Worm Jugs can ship Monday thru Friday upon customer request, otherwise they will ship Monday pending weather check.
The extra shipping cost and shipment delay is an investment in the health of your worms: they will most likely survive up to 10 days in their shipping boxes, but the quicker they get to their new home, the quicker they will recover and really start to establish themselves in their new home.
back to topWe are unable to combine shipping costs for WormGin and Worm Jug products. Each comes in its own separate box with its own shipping cost.
Worms and supplies are shipped in the same box, up to 10 pounds before the box gets too full. With the WormGin Regular, you are paying UPS for 41 pounds of package, but the actual weight is much less so you get "free shipping" on worms and supplies. For the WormGin Junior, you will need to pay for the extra weight (which is still a very inexpensive way to get your worms).
UPS 3-day Select uses three-digit zone numbers starting with 3

Shipping Policies can be flexible upon customer request and cooperation.
back to topYour weather forecast and your worms:
The wormgineer personally checks the weather forecast for all orders with worms included received by Sunday at Noon, and will e-mail you by 9:00 PM PDT on Sunday if it looks like shipping your order this week is a bad idea.
For those orders where I send such notice, the weather will again be checked Monday afternoon before UPS arrives and a final call made on shipping or delaying for a week. I would rather ship, and you want the stuff you paid for, but if the worms die, neither of us will be thrilled.
I notify you not just to warn about possible delay, but also to let you make the call to ship or not if you respond before my UPS guy arrives in the late afternoon Monday. No worries: if there is no response from you I will make the call, and of course notify you if I decide to delay shipment for a week due to extreme conditions.
Any Worm Jug orders received after Sunday at Noon and before Tuesday Noon PST will be shipped on that Tuesday unless a weather check causes me to delay until the next Monday. Notification either way of course, and your Worm Jug will be reserved and thus another week older, which is a good thing actually.
No live worms?
If you receive a Worm Jug without live worms, or you ordered a half-pound or pound of worms with your WormGin you are covered by my 90 day warranty against defects. But here's the thing: If they didn't survive the first time, how do I know they will survive the second time? I really don't know how to package them any better than I do. Also, it is not real easy to tell if the worms are ALL dead and you may not want to do it. Plus, I don't think this is going to be a problem, given all the precautions taken. The chances are excellent that you will unbox your order, open the bag, and see Red Wigglers wiggling. Open under a light so you can see the dark red worms against the dark soil.
If you don't see worms, please register on the forums and start a thread so the wormgineer and other folks can help you find out if they are really ALL dead. Worms are included and we have not done our part if you truly do not have at least a pioneer population. Don't worry, we will get your warranty claim taken care of. Depending on your location, I may elect to have someone else send you replacement worms.
Broken Worm Jugs:
If your Worm Jug is broken upon arrival (it hasn't happened yet, this section will be updated if and when it does - we pack it very well), you will of course be sent a replacement ASAP. Stop opening it, seal it back up and email us. We will have UPS pick it up. Your assistance will be required in filing the claim with UPS. If your Worm Jug has a crack in the glass, that is also covered by warranty, but you may consider not sending it back if it is in the side of the Jug Bottom and looks like a minor crack to you. A replacement Jug Top will be shipped to you if yours is cracked or broken on arrival. A broken Jug Bottom (no longer one piece of glass) needs to be immediately re-boxed and returned complete. Please keep your warranty in force by emailing me immediately upon discovery that your Worm Jug has arrived broken or cracked.
The Worm Jug must be handled carefully at all times - the warranty does not cover breakage after shipment. (So a minor crack should not grow - after all the idea is to leave the worms alone as much as possible! It is very unlikely that a crack would cause water to leak out, and the worms will never know the difference. It certainly did not have a crack when we shipped it.)
back to topWhat day will your worm order arrive?
For the Worm Jug: Thursday, in most cases, because you upgraded to 3-day Select and we shipped on Monday. :-)
UPS Ground is reliable but does not provide definite day of delivery, while 3-day Select service does.
Once you get the tracking number from us, you will be able to see the scheduled delivery date. UPS is fairly reliable with meeting that date, and it certainly seems more reliable than going by their "days in transit" number.
Note that the UPS zone number does not match the number of days your shipment will require. For example, Chicago (60609) is zone 7 and UPS ground requires 4 days in transit, while NYNY (10005) and Miami FL (33004) are both zone 8 and 5 days in transit.
In some cases, shipping to a residential address will add a day, but that may or may not be included in the "days in transit" number.
Because 5 days in transit since Monday runs into the weekend, 4 or more days in transit to residential addresses generally will arrive no sooner than the Monday following the shipping date. (But you need to be prepared for a delivery on Friday.) The worms will most likely be fine, but that is is why we recommend 3-day Select for the entire eastern half of the USA: avoiding the weekend delay just to be nice to the worms.
OK, having said all that, remember that right now is generally a great time to ship worms. Get your Worm Jug now and start reaping the rewards.
